Hong Kong’s New National Security Law
Hong Kong is planning to adopt its own national security law similar to that in Beijing, raising concerns about further erosion of civil liberties. The draft law covers issues such as treason, sedition, and state secrets, already resulting in the arrest of over 100 individuals in accordance with Beijing’s 2020 law. The new law allows for closed-door trials, extended detention, and the banning of organizations deemed to be working for foreign forces. Critics fear it will be used to crackdown on dissidents and undermine the freedoms promised in 1997. The speed at which the law is being adopted has raised questions of legality and legitimacy. Former lawmakers and activists warn of Beijing’s heavy-handed approach, stifling opposition and freedom of speech.
