Attack on Matthias Ecke
Matthias Ecke, the Saxon SPD lead candidate for the European elections, was recently seriously injured in a brutal attack during the campaign in Dresden.
Call for Better Protection
Federal Minister of the Interior, Nancy Faeser, is now calling for better protection for politicians and helpers in the campaign to protect democrats from attacks. Faeser emphasized the need to consistently prosecute violent offenders and protect democratic forces.
- A 17-year-old attacker has already turned himself in and confessed to the crime.
- This attack, as well as other attacks on politicians and election helpers, have caused shock nationwide.
- Faeser warned of the increasing political aggression, especially from the far right, and called for political responsibility to clearly identify antidemocratic acts of violence.
Violence endangers democratic discourse and must be decisively combated. Matthias Ecke himself spoke from the hospital and emphasized that it is not just about him, but about all those who are marginalized in the defense of democracy. As a result, a special conference of interior ministers is convened to discuss measures to better protect politicians during the campaign.
