Hundreds of people were evacuated from communities like Puerto Williams, and videos on social media showed a calm evacuation amidst wailing sirens. The earthquake struck at a depth of just 10 km in the Drake Passage between Cape Horn and Antarctica. The Magallanes region, the largest and southernmost region of Chile with a population of approximately 166,000 people, was the most affected.
President Gabriel Boric ensured that all resources were available for the earthquake response, calling for an evacuation of the Magallanes region’s coastline. The Chilean Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service (SHOA) predicted waves reaching Antarctica and towns in the extreme south of Chile. In Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world in Argentina, all water activities and navigation in the Beagle Channel were suspended for at least three hours. The local government advised calmness in the face of such events.
