Carolabrücke bridge collapse in Dresden
Most probably, the cause of the Carolabrücke bridge collapse in Dresden was material corrosion. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as approximately 100 meters of the bridge fell into the Elbe river. The incident happened on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, leading to unfounded speculation about a possible terrorist attack that was dismissed by the police.
Impact and aftermath
The bridge, built in 1971, is an important transportation route connecting Dresden’s Old Town with the Neustadt district. The bridge and surrounding areas are currently closed off, including a section of the Elberadweg bike path. Two large hot water supply lines were damaged in the collapse, requiring immediate repair to restore warm water to residents. The collapsed section was scheduled for renovation next year as part of the Carolabrücke restoration project.
