Ma Long’s Opportunity in Paris
Ma Long, 14-time world champion and the most successful table tennis Olympian of all time, will have the opportunity to win a sixth Olympic gold medal in Paris, despite not being able to go for a third consecutive singles title.
He has been confirmed as the third player for the Chinese team tournament, alongside Wang Chuqin and Fan Zhendong. China’s domination in table tennis is evident with their women’s team lineup remaining the same as that which won gold in Tokyo, featuring Chen Meng, Sun Yingsha, and Wang Manyu.
The competition for a spot on the national team is fierce, with China having won 32 of the 37 gold medals since the sport was introduced to the Olympics in 1988. Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha will partner up in the mixed doubles event to try and secure the one gold medal China missed out on in Tokyo. Liang Jingkun and Wang Yidi will serve as substitute players for the men’s and women’s teams. The 2024 Olympic table tennis events will be held at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles from July 27 to August 10.
