European football qualifications in Bundesliga
1. FC Heidenheim will play in the Europa League for the first time as a result of Bayer Leverkusen’s victory in the DFB-Pokal final. This victory by the Champions League qualifier led to the transfer of the cup winner’s Europa League spot to the Bundesliga.
TSG Hoffenheim, finishing seventh in the league, will directly enter the Europa League instead of going through the playoff for the Conference League. Heidenheim, finishing eighth, will compete in the third-tier European competition.
Unexpected performance of Heidenheim this season, coming from the 2. Bundesliga and initially seen as a relegation candidate, has led them to eighth place in the Bundesliga. They have even defeated top teams like Bayern. Their reward now is the opportunity to qualify for the Conference League.
Calculations for European spots among Bundesliga clubs are not yet finalized. If Borussia Dortmund wins the Champions League final against Real Madrid, Eintracht Frankfurt, finishing sixth, would move up to the Champions League, resulting in six German clubs in the competition – a first.
Other European spots will not be affected by the outcome of the Champions League final.
