Senator Bob Menendez Faces New Charges
Senator Bob Menendez from New Jersey is facing new charges of obstructing justice in a corruption scheme involving Egypt and Qatar.
The allegations relate to claims that he acted as a foreign agent and received bribes to benefit the Egyptian government.
The indictment also accuses Menendez of conspiracy, bribery, acting as a foreign agent, extortion, and internet fraud.
One of his co-defendants has already accepted a plea deal and is cooperating with investigators.
Prosecutors claim that Menendez instructed his lawyers to deceive the U.S. Department of Justice about bribe payments.
Menendez is also accused of receiving bribes to benefit Qatar.
Menendez, his wife Nadine, and three other businessmen were initially charged in a federal corruption scheme.
Menendez, Nadine, and two other co-defendants have pleaded not guilty.
