Georg Gänswein’s Possible Appointment as Papal Ambassador
Georg Gänswein, former private secretary to Pope Benedict XVI, was banished from the Vatican by Pope Francis last year and had to return to his home diocese of Freiburg. Now, Italian media report that Gänswein could be sent as a papal ambassador to the Baltics. The position is currently vacant, as the former nuncio of Vilnius was appointed ambassador to Italy and San Marino.
Although neither the Vatican nor Gänswein himself have commented on the speculation, this possible appointment fits recent events. Earlier this month, Francis accused Gänswein of a “lack of decency and humanity” in a book interview, as he had published a book about his time as close to Benedict XVI shortly after his death. Since his dismissal, Gänswein has been living in Freiburg without an official position. Considered conservative, he became Cardinal Ratzinger’s closest confidant in Rome and later his spokesperson in the Vatican. By possibly sending him as an ambassador, the Pope could resolve a lingering conflict and offer Gänswein a new professional perspective.
