Hutis are an armed group in Yemen that originated approximately 35 years ago and belong to the Zaidi sect of Islam. They rise up against the government in Yemen claiming that Zaidis are being oppressed and marginalized. The current main issue is the conflicts in Yemen due to arms, with the underlying cause being weapon permits and salaries.
Hutis control the northwest part of Yemen and have between 100,000 and 200,000 well-armed fighters. In recent years, they have attacked merchant ships in the Red Sea, allegedly in response to Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip.
